Chef Works is honored to contribute to The Grand Chef Throwdown, a culinary competition and celebration benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We will be donating 45 aprons and two chef coats to the winners of the competition.
Read on to learn more about The Grand Chef Throwdown, and why we’re so excited to be able to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Benefiting Cystic Fibrosis
The Grand Chef Throwdown is a fun food-filled time for both attendees and the competing chefs, but what makes the event truly special is that all of the proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition that affects the lungs and other internal organs. People with cystic fibrosis suffer from chronic and persistent lung infections that make it harder for them to breathe. Currently, there is no cure for cystic fibrosis and the average life expectancy is between 30-40 years of age.
Research for cystic fibrosis is not publicly funded through the U.S. government, so any research to find better treatments or a cure must be privately funded. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is a global leader in funding research and drug development. In addition, the foundation provides community resources and outreach for people living with the disease.
Treatment for cystic fibrosis has come a long way in the past few decades, mostly thanks to private donations to organizations like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Click here for more information about the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and to learn how you can get involved.
The San Diego Grand Chef Throwdown
The San Diego Grand Chef Throwdown is a yearly chef competition and culinary event celebrating chefs from both sides of the border: San Diego, California, and Baja, Mexico. All proceeds from the event directly benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
This year marks the 7th year of the Grand Chef Throwdown, as well as the first in-person event since 2019. Around 500 guests will arrive from across the country to see the chefs battle for the Flor Franco Award of Culinary Excellence.
Flor Franco, who is chairing the event with Wayn Hart, is a longtime advocate of promoting Latin American cuisine both in San Diego and Baja. The Grand Chef Throwdown is a great opportunity for these two culinary communities to come together for a little bit of friendly competition. Chef Works is proud to donate 45 aprons and 2 chef coats as part of the prize package for the winning chefs.
It’s not easy to pry chefs away from their restaurants on a Friday night, but the showdown gives these 28 chefs the opportunity to battle for the ultimate prize, as well as have a lot of fun doing it. There are sweet and savory competitions, so everyone gets to showcase their talents.
The 500 guests vote for their favorite dishes, and then a culinary council of 18 chefs and foodies cast in their votes. The council tastes each dish blind, allowing them to vote fairly and without bias. After tasting all 28 dishes, the culinary council is then invited to eat a three-course meal. It’s tough being a judge these days!
After pausing The Grand Chef Throwdown for three years due to the pandemic, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is delighted to bring back this beloved event, with plenty of precautions to keep everyone safe.
Chef Works is honored to continue to support this amazing event and wishes the best of luck to all of the participating chefs! To see how you can contribute to a cure for cystic fibrosis, get involved with your local Cystic Fibrosis Foundation chapter.
